UIAA/UNTH SICKLE CELL PROJECT

University of Ibadan Alumni Association, UIAA, Enugu State Branch, Partners With The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, On Sickle Cell Project

In the year 2012, the UIAA Enugu state branch entered into a working partnership with the UNTH on sickle cell project. Under the partnership, the UIAA undertook to make periodic donation of drugs for sickle cell disease, SCD to the UNTH while the hospital dispenses such drugs to its sickle cell patients free of charge. This hard work by the Association in the health sector was in response to its unwavering commitment to community service and also, to contribute in practical and concrete terms to the alleviation of the burden of SCD in the Nigerian society.

SCD is an inherited condition that affects 20-25 million people worldwide. There are approximately three million people living with SCD in Nigeria where over 100,000 affected babies are born every year. People living with SCD may have shortage of blood (anemia), recurrent episodes of very severe pains (sickle cell crisis) and damage to various parts of the body; including the brain, lungs, liver and kidneys. SCD reduces longevity and quality of life. It places an immense psychological, social and economic burden on affected persons, their families, friends and communities.

In the pursuance of the partnership with the UNTH on the project, the UIAA led by the then chairman of the branch, Professor Patrick Eya on behalf of UIAA made a donation of various drugs for SCD to the UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla. On hand to receive the donation on behalf of the hospital was Dr. Fred Ugwumba Ag Chairman Medical Advisory Committee UNTH Ituku Ozalla.

Earlier in 2008, as part of the events by the UIAA Enugu state branch to mark the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the University of Ibadan, the Association held a well attended public lecture on SCD at MODOTELS, Club Road GRA Enugu.

Being highly motivated by the lecture, the members unanimously resolved to support the care of the affected persons who receive care in the UNTH. This was the genesis of the decision which subsequently, culminated in the formal agreement with the hospital management on the project.
