UIAA Enugu State Branch Honours Its Deserving Members In A Dinner Party

The University of Ibadan Alumni Association, Enugu State Branch organized its 2015 Alumni Dinner Party and Award Night on Friday 20th November, 2015.  The event took place at Universal Hotel, Independence Layout, Enugu.

The event was specifically planned to celebrate the pioneers, that is, those who matriculated between 1948 and 1958 and to honour some other members of the Branch who have distinguished themselves in various ways over the years.

Prominent personalities who graced the occasion included, the National President of UIAA, Dr. Kemi Emina, a former National President Chief P.A. Dunkwu, Elder Dr. Kalu U. Kalu, Guest Speaker and HRH Igwe Chijioke Nwankwo, Osuofia II Ezenawfia, Igwe Umunri, Royal Father of the Day.

The pioneers who were honoured were Professor Anezi Okoro, Prof. W.I.B Onuigbo, Prof. Ukwu I. Ukwu and Engr. Laz Mba.   A number of pioneers namely, Prof. Boniface Nwakoby, Prof. Chijioke Anyanwu and Dr. Emma Osisioma were also honoured but could not attend.  Sadly, one of the pioneers earmarked for the honour, Prof. Emma Emenike, had recently passed on.  The assembly observed one minute silence in his behalf.

The Deserving Member Award went to four members namely: Professor Patrick E. Eya of National Open University, Barr. Fidelis Mbadugha of A.N. Anyamene Law Firm, Dr, Charles Ugomouh of the Nigeria Police and Barr Ada Onyenwike formerly of PRODA, Enugu.

After the traditional kola nut ceremonies and the welcome address presented by the Branch Chairman, Sir Sam Umesie, the audience and the guests were introduced to the guest lecturer, Elder Kalu U. Kalu by Professor J.C. Azubuike. In the lecture entitled “The Economics of Corruption, Elder Kalu gave a detailed account of the problems of corruption in the Nigerian system.  He lamented the apparent inability of successive administrations in Nigeria, both civilian and military, to curb or eradicate the cankerworm of corruption.  Most people present appreciated the enormity of the problem but no one had a clear cut solution to offer.

After the very well received lecture, the stage was set for the awards.  The pioneers were handled first.  Profiles were read and plaques presented.  Those who were honoured showed their appreciation.  The four members who received Deserving Members Awards were also presented to the audience.  Their profiles and accomplishments were highlighted and appropriate plaques were presented to each.  Professor Patrick Eya could not come in person but he was ably represented by Engr. Charles Ngene.

It was indeed a night to remember.  The event was presided over by Dr. Ralph Igwebuike.  In his own contribution, Chief Barr Nnia Nwodo gave a motivational speech, urging all to support the noble projects and proposals of the Association.  He also made a handsome cash donation.  A live band sponsored by Chief Nnia Nwodo complemented the d-jay to provide musical entertainment to members and their guests.

Some of the members who were honoured and those who received awards as well as their guest made cash donations to the Association.  A number of pledges were also made.  The event was concluded by 10p.m
